“No,” I told him. “The cookies are for Daniel. You just had a piece of cake.”
Anyway, Last Sunday, I had found some gluten-free, egg-free cookies; after Daniel finished stuffing the banana into his mouth, I gave him a cookie. The tragedy lies not in the fact that Josh didn’t get a cookie or that I haven’t yet gotten a million dollars,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a new car, a cottage on a beach and a sailboat. The real tragedy lies in the fact that we let our fear of lack destroy our awareness of happiness. Many of us have simply forgotten how to be happy. Or we’ve forgotten what happiness feels like.
But we adults have spent most of our lives working hard to insure that we have no lack of things in our lives. Unfortunately, this often leads to the illusion that it is things that make us happy. Or worse, we defer our sense of happiness because we think that if we only had (fill in the blank),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then we could be truly happy.
Are you happy?
(Daniel will probably grow up associating bananas with church and vice-versa. Should he decide to follow his great-grandfather, great-grandmother, grandfather, and grandmother {or his mother, who runs the audio-visual for the service} into the ministry, he will probably experience an overwhelming urge to eat a banana after each sermon.)
Then there are the older kids who want to believe that they are too old for such nonsense. Too cool,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Too world-weary.
Immediately, Josh experienced the lack of a cookie. His lower lip came out in a pout. Fortunately, Josh is young enough to know how happy he is and the incident was soon forgotten.
Usually,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], though, they will participate in the actions because that offers them a platform for 1) making noise,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 2) hamming it up 3) indulging the sudden realization that, in spite of the angst of growing up, they really are happy.
The slightly older children may know the words and sing them with gusto,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but for them, too, the motions are the exciting part.
Let me give you an example. My sixteen-month old grandson has severe allergies. When we go down to the church parlor after worship for refreshments, there is rarily anything he can have. So I have gotten in the habit of tucking a banana into my purse so Daniel will have something to munch on while his brothers are chowing down on cake or cookies.
What about you? Are you happy? Do you know it? If so, how do you show it? Do you “go through the motions” grudgingly or with gusto?
The problem with that mindset is that when we get (fill in the blank), we find we’re still not happy. We decide we need a bigger and better (fill in the blank) or something else altogether. That’s like Josh who thought that having a big piece of chocolate cake could make him happy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], only to decide that he needed a cookie, too.

Many people call me and say `how are you going to make me quit smoking ? I`m very stubborn.` Again,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], go back to the willingness factor. I always ask them if they want to quit and if they`re willing to work with me and use hypnosis to do it.
~ Hypnosis cannot be used to control someone else's mind, or their actions. We can only control ourselves, our responses to situations, events or things heard/read.

Who can be hypnotised?
An additional note:
~ A person unwilling to be hypnotised. If someone doesn’t want to use hypnosis, then of course they won’t be hypnotised. Hypnosis is a powerful tool but it does rely on your willingness to use it.
~ A person who is drunk.
~ A person with extremely low intelligence, typically scoring an IQ level lower than 70
~ someone who has no rapport with the hypnotist or hypnotherapist. While this isn`t always included in the list, I`m going to add rapport as a factor. It is helpful to have a good or reasonable rapport with the person who is about to hypnotise you. You need to be comfortable with that person as they’re going to guide you into relaxation.
For all you runners out there, I would like to add that running is a great way to use self-hypnosis to come up with solutions or ideas. Just start your mind on that route to lateral thinking as you start your body on the running route by asking some questions in your internal voice (check my blog entry on my website on internal questions and how to word them for the maximum efficacy).
~ People who are better served by going to a psychiatrist, psychologist or physician. Hypnosis isn’t intended as a replacement for psychiatric or medical care.
~ people who suffer from epilepsy are often advised not to use hypnosis. As always, if you have any concerns regarding such conditions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you should consult with a doctor.
Can you be hypnotised,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]?
During the initial free phone or Skype consultation I do with prospective clients, I check for the following things:
~ whether they expect it will work,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
~ whether THEY want it work. I’ve capitalised ‘they’ because it’s important that the person calling me wants it to work,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], instead of, for example, their partner,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], spouse, work colleagues want them to do it.
Who cannot be hypnotised?
Everybody is in a hypnotic state at some point of each day. By this I mean, a state where we’re doing things but not needing to concentrate consciously on doing it as it’s a familiar activity. I don’t just mean vegging out in front of a movie - a person can even be in a state of hypnosis while running. For example, during the spring and summer, i.e. when the track is visible in the parks here in Canada, I run 4 or 5 miles every other day in the beautiful St Lawrence parks. I do the same route and at the end, (presuming I don’t need to move out of the way for slow moving SUVs filled with people who prefer to experience the park by looking out of their truck windows at the view), I actually have no recollection of having done my run. I look at the stop watch on my cell phone and know I must have done it by looking at the time passed, but I only remember starting it. That’s because I don’t need to be consciously aware of where I’m running. I’ve done it so many times, I can run it ‘unconsciously’ i.e. just allowing my unconscious to guide me. If a truck has to go by me, then my conscious mind needs to become alert again so I can move out of its or their way.
When people say that they went to a hypnotist and `nothing happened`, I ask them what they expected to happen and I invariably find that they either hadn`t been adequately informed or hadn`t understood what to expect, ahead of the session - they`d erroneously adhered to their belief that they needed be unconscious,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and / or like a zombie in a movie. It is helpful for prospective clients to be carefully and repeatedly informed of what hypnosis is and is NOT and to realize the potential for positive and empowering effects. Personally, I find it beneficial to reiterate briefly what to expect before every session,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], even with clients who `know the drill`.

The first thing is to become aware that these thoughts are there. This is a significant first step in conquering attention-seeking behaviour. You must cancel the whole negative thinking process as soon as you are aware of it. You do this by reprogramming these negative beliefs with positive beliefs: "I'm as good as the others. I'm just as good-looking as the others. Women do like me."
Also the way you carry yourself through your body language and tone of voice,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], has an enormous influence on the way you think about yourself and how you are judged by others. To develop a more confident personality move around as if you're confident - and this goes for standing and sitting also. How this works is that you are a psycho-physical being: if you change your physical behaviour you change your mindset; if you change your mindset you can change you behaviour. It's that easy. Just concentrate on developing a confident physical behaviour. Then the mind and thoughts will eventually act accordingly, but you must feel the confidence flowing through you every time you move around in a confident way.
You may find it surprising to know that there is more than one form of confidence. Some mannerisms that can seem to be a sign of confidence in a person are in fact not confidence at all. The thing is what is genuine confidence? Well, genuine confidence is a natural deportment or magnetic energy that is generated by certain individuals. Fake confidence on the other hand can be observed on an every day basis in the form of boasting and attention seeking conduct. The signs of someone with fake confidence are the excessively loud tone of voice,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the sideways fleeting look to see if anyone is impressed by the conversation, and the inflated body language. The person with this false sense of confidence is always thinking that they lack some thing or other. The question is how do you rid yourself of this false confident behaviour,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so that you can substitute it with true confidence?
Take an inventory of yourself,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but don't compare yourself to other people because that is a pointless thing to do. Everyone has different strengths and restrictions. You are good at some things that other people are not good at. If you think about it even a constant complainer is good at something,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], i.e. moaning.
Improve your mind and body every day by reading and exercising more,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. These two activities are one of the best ways to developing self-confidence quickly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Also set clear goals and how you are going to achieve them,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Take charge of your mind by not allowing your negative thoughts create negative feelings,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
