U.S. journalist Roxana Saberi is back home after an Iranian appeals court May 11 cut her prison sentence to a suspended two-year term. Saberi had been held in Tehran's Evin prison since January after she was arrested for working in Iran without valid press credentials. She was later accused of spying and convicted in a closed-door trial that her father said lasted less than an hour. Saberi, who gave Voice of America an exclusive Farsi interview,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], talked about the ordeal in a TV broadcast to Iran over the Persian News Network.
Since Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], human rights organizations and foreign governments have accused Iran of holding, and in some cases, mistreating political prisoners. Iran denies the practice.
�� False Confession
Saberi said she was released only after she falsely confessed that she was a U.S. spy. "They promise to release you if you confess. One thing they do is they record the confession and they video recorded my confession,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Saberi said. "Now I want to say here that if one day they decide to show that video,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's all a lie," she said.
Saberi said she was not physically tortured in the prison but she was always under tremendous mental pressure.
"At first I was in solitary for two weeks," she explained. "Then they transferred me to a jail with three,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], four other women who changed constantly. But they were all political prisoners in ward 209 of the prison,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," she said.
�� International Attention
Saberi had worked as a freelance journalist in Iran since 2003, filing stories for NPR [U.S. public radio network], the BBC and other news outlets. The former Miss North Dakota grew up in Fargo and has Iranian citizenship through her father.
Saberi's arrest triggered Western media attention which generated international pressure on Iran to release her. But she says until she found out about the international support, she thought no one in the world knew where she was.
"After several weeks when they sentenced me to eight years in prison, I saw the reaction of the Western media to my case in a report on Iranian state television,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], because after a while they gave me a television set,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Saberi said.
She says she is out of prison now because of that support. "I have to say that without the international support, I would still be in prison,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Saberi noted. "Just as is the case with others who are still in prison there."
�� No Bitterness
Even after her experience in Iran's prison system facing what she said were false charges, Saberi now expresses no bitterness about her father's homeland.
"Of course, no part of the world is problem-free," she said. "In Iran too, there are challenges and opportunities,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and I think this is the real visage of Iran. There are different people, different groups and this is the beauty of Iran."

Although Ethiopian forces have been heavily involved in Somalia's recent fighting, Ethiopia's Minister of Information Berhane Hailu tells VOA Somali government troops are on their own in the capital.
"The forces of the Ethiopian defense are not in a position,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or they do not have [a] strategy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to enter Mogadishu. If it is necessary to control Mogadishu, the forces of the transitional federal government are enough," he said. "So, the priority that should be given at this moment is to have peace talks between the transitional government and the Islamic Courts."
But eyewitnesses in Jowhar Wednesday told the French news agency, AFP, that Ethiopian troops appeared to be marching towards Mogadishu after Islamist fighters fled the town. One resident said he was under the impression that the fighting is heading to the capital.

Somalia's ambassador to Ethiopia, Abdikarin Farah, Wednesday told reporters in Addis Ababa that Somali government troops also do not intend to go into Mogadishu so as to avoid incurring civilian casualties,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but plan to surround the city until Islamist fighters surrender. The Islamists, in the meantime,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], vowed to re-group in the capital and continue the war.

Ethiopian forces played an active role in heavy fighting in various parts of Somalia over the past week,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], bombing two airports, firing missiles at retreating Islamic fighters, and waging ground battles alongside government troops.
Minister Berhane explains why Ethiopia joined forces with Somalia to battle with fighters from the Islamic Courts Union.
"They are a threat to the national interests of Ethiopia. They have been planning to attack Ethiopia in different ways, including terrorist acts around the Somali region in Ethiopia, [also] in some parts of the country, including Addis Ababa [Ethiopian capital]. So our interest is both to protect our national interest and also to assist the transitional federal government of Somalia," he said.
The Islamic Courts Union,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], meanwhile, has long spoken out against Ethiopia's support of Somalia's transitional government and vehemently opposes the presence of foreign peacekeepers in the country, particularly from Ethiopia.
The recent fighting was sparked by the passing of a deadline the Islamists set to order Ethiopian troops to leave Somalia or else face war.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi Tuesday declared that his forces had "broken the back" of the Islamic Courts Union and forced them to retreat,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], leading Ethiopia to be "halfway" to a decisive victory.
But some analysts say that it could be very difficult for Ethiopia to sustain a longer-term offensive against Somali Islamists.
David Shinn is a former U.S. ambassador to Ethiopia who is now a political science professor at George Washington University,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
He tells VOA that, while Ethiopia may have scored a short-term military victory against the Islamists, the Islamists would likely resume fighting once Ethiopia withdraws, as the withdrawal could create a partial vacuum.
Shinn says he questions the overall gain to Somalia from the presence of Ethiopian troops, but says the situation would be worse if Ethiopia decides to stay.
"If the Ethiopians attempt to stay for a long period of time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which they say they're not, then you open up the prospect of a long, drawn-out, and nasty guerilla conflict, which I don't think that the Ethiopians find a very pleasant situation," he said.
Meanwhile, as the fighting rages in Somalia, Djibouti and Kenya called on the Ethiopian government to pull its troops out of Somalia, saying that the troops' presence threatens regional stability. Kenya says it is arranging an emergency regional meeting on the issue.
The U.S. State Department Tuesday issued a statement urging Ethiopia to show "maximum restraint" in Somalia, but saying that Ethiopia has "genuine security concerns" and has sent its troops into Somalia at the request of the "legitimate governing authority" of the Baidoa-based transitional government.

With the approach of the December presidential election in South Korea,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], studies of the Korea-U.S. alliance have emerged as a key research theme for an advisory group for the U.S. Defense Department and other American think tanks.
American foreign-affairs think tanks are conducting intensive research on the Seoul-Washington alliance,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], apparently reflecting a sense of serious tensions in the bilateral relationship,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], according to experts participating in the projects. They stress the need for a thorough review of the alliance.
The advisory group for the Defense Department led by the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) and the Institute for National Strategic Studies (INSS) of the National Defense University published its report last month. It said the Korea-U,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].S,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. alliance today ��faces significant practical and conceptual challenges,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].�� We judge alliance transformation the best option to address both the military and political dimensions of the alliance." The privately run Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation has also organized a project on the bilateral relationship under the supervision of the foundation��s executive director Gordon Flake. Security experts from both Left and Right from the two countries are exchanging opinions on the future direction of the alliance,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], traveling back and forth on a regular basis.

Other U.S. research papers have also focused on the future of the alliance after the election. Chinese Foreign Minister spokeswoman Jiang Yu said in a regular briefing Thursday that, "Some people keep making up stories. I don't know what their intention is." Jiang said China is "resolutely" opposed to so-called cyber crimes and has cracked down on such crimes, including hacking. She was responding to the latest report on acts of computer espionage originating in China.
The Wall Street Journal this week said spies used the Internet to break into a computer system containing information about the $300 billion jet project. Current and former government officials told the newspaper that the attack appeared to originate in China,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Officials told the paper that the spies stole a sizable amount of data on the next-generation fighter. But they were not able to access the project's most sensitive information, which is stored on a computer with no Internet access. The newspaper report said computer spies have also been able to infiltrate,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or hack,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Air Force's air traffic control system.

The so-called "new car syndrome" may be seriously bad for your health,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. A study found that new cars contain dangerous levels of 24 different carcinogenic and toxic substances,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. The Korea Transportation Safety Authority submitted to Democratic Party Rep. Lee Nak-yon a report on the air quality inside 38 brand-new cars produced here.
It showed that the air inside the cars had an average of 111.3 micrograms per cubic meter (��/��) of benzene, a carcinogen. That's more than 22 times the limit of 5��/�� recommended by German testing and standards organization Technischer Ueberwachungs-Verein. It's also more than three times the 30��/�� limit recommended by the Environment Ministry in its guidelines for new homes to prevent "sick building syndrome." Some cars had as much as 384��/�� of benzene.
Another toxic substance, xylene, was also detected in quantities exceeding government regulations. An average of 827.9��/�� of xylene was found in the cars, more than the 700��/�� limit. Dangerous levels of the carcinogens formaldehyde (97.7��/��) and toluene (517.6��/��) were also found. While these amounts are lower than the permissible levels for Korean homes, they exceed the limits set in Germany and Japan.
The problem gets worse in the summer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the report said. Emissions were found to increase up to eight times normal when the temperature inside some vehicles rose. The KOTSA report noted that the levels of xylene were particularly worrying because it is highly dangerous. SUVs had higher levels of toxic substances than other vehicles. The KOTSA didn't make public the vehicle models or their makers.
Most of the toxic substances were found to come from the ceiling, seats and floor mats. Benzene and styrene came from the ceiling,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], while formaldehyde came from seats. Floor mats gave off toluene,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ethyl-benzene and xylene, and dashboards gave off styrene and xylene.
A total of 24 toxic substances were found in the cars. The study said it took some four to five months for the levels of formaldehyde and ethyl-benzene to decrease,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
In a poll of 800 buyers of new cars,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 51.5 percent of the respondents said they had experienced some toxic symptoms while driving. Rep. Lee said that while the government has yet to set standards for car air quality, automakers should set their own standards and replace dangerous interior materials with ones that are safer.

Could repeated writing of malicious comments about a certain celebrity in cyberspace be classified as stalking? Certainly a number of celebrities have suffered from stalkers in the real world, including John Lennon,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who was shot dead by one in December 1980.
The U.S. National Institute of Justice defined the term as "a course of conduct directed at a specific person that involves repeated (two or more occasions) visual or physical proximity, nonconsensual communication,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or verbal,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], written, or implied threats,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or a combination thereof,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that would cause a reasonable person fear." This could bring within the purview even repeated Internet rumors about actress Choi Jin-sil, who recently killed herself.
It can also be a problem for ordinary people. In a poll of 8,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 men and 8,000 women in 1998, the NIJ found that 8 percent of women and 2 percent of men had been stalked. The figures roughly translate into 9.4 million women and 2.3 million men. Most of the stalkers were acquaintances of the victims,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and only 23 percent of women and 36 percent of men were stalked by somebody they did not know.
Most stalkers had a major personal breakdown and usually had no job or no close friend of the opposite sex.
